Mean What You Say

“Say what you mean and mean what you say”

is an old saying that says so much.

I count on you to mean what you say

holding me accountable too.

When you say “I love you”

I know you mean it.

Then you say “It stays in place until I say.”

“It stays in place until I take it out.”

“It stays in place despite the discomfort”

“It stays in place until I want it out.”

Inside, I glow. I swell with joy.

I can count on you to say what you mean.

I can count on you to take control.

But minutes later you ask (not say) if I want it out.

The glow flickers and my joy is in collapse.

Obviously, you didn’t mean what you said

nor said what you meant.

What else didn’t you mean that you said?
